VINYL RELEASE OF THE WEEK : STRATEGY “STRATEGY” on PEAK OIL

This week we are very happy to announce that we’re carrying titles from PEAK OIL, a new L.A. based label that shows a lot of potential in exploring mainly west coast styles of experimental and fringe techno, and I base that assumption on the first 2 releases in the catalog. PEAK02 is by a familiar name to DSCRMNT followers, as we’ve been carrying M. Geddes Gengras‘ tapes on various labels since our humble beginnings. This time around he’s on more of a techno bender under the alias of PERSONABLE, and it’s a great release that we’ve been enjoying immensely. However, the selection for “Vinyl Release of the Week” here in our tiny offices has to go to Paul “Strategy” Dickow for his self titled e.p. (PEAK01).

When I think back on it, Strategy’s music has been a steady part of my musical diet since 2003 with the release of “Strut” on Outward Music Company (now defunct label out of pdx). Since that first CD we’ve followed his dub drenched electronic experiments for labels like Kranky, Orac, Audio Dregs, his own Community Library imprint, and now Peak Oil (there are more labels I could add to that list, but you know how to use Discogs, right?). This particular e.p. continues Paul’s exploration of loosely played, rain soaked, Northwest bent electronic music that feels like just our style. Yes, we recommend it.

Northwest, Represent.

Cassette Release of the Week : BERU “FIRE EYES GATHER SOULS”

BERU “FIRE EYES GATHER SOULS”

What a pleasure to find a new and unexpected box of Digitalis Limited tapes waiting on my doorstep one afternoon, and even better for it containing a new release from Beru (Jessica Collins), from whom we haven’t heard any new music since 2010′s “Daughter Of Eve” (also released on Digitalis Limited).

Seriously honored to be able to highlight this collection of dark, twisted, and noisy love songs as our cassette of the week. The strength of Collins’ experimental, “noise pop” structures matches wits against the vulnerability of her voice in a way that we can’t help but listen to again and again and again and again . . . .

Another must have recommendation from us, to you.

EDIT : SOLD OUT
