What is DSCRMNT?

DSCRMNT is aka Discriminate Music. We are an online retailer of experimental and underground music and we prefer analog formats for listening to, and collecting, cool sounds. We launched our first website on May 9th, 2009 while living in Portland, Oregon. A couple of moves and 2+ years later we are now based in Austin, Texas. You are currently viewing our 2nd attempt at building a website from scratch, and we're continually working on improving the stylistic aspects of the site. If you come across any functional errors we would appreciate a quick note via our CONTACT page.

Our inventory is selected based on our own personal listening habits, and we go out of our way to work directly with the labels that are represented on our website. We consider ourselves to be working in a sort of partnership with these labels, and we do our best to present their releases in a way that is professional and conducive to increasing awareness that such cool music exists, and that such cool labels are releasing it.

We also try very hard to provide a simple and streamlined shopping experience for our customers. Customer orders are treated as a priority and we require no database of excuses to draw from if your order was not shipped in a timely manner. We simply ship your order on time and provide you with all the necessary tracking information that we have available to us. Good customer service matters, especially in a small shop like ours.

Is everything that's listed on your site actually in stock? How do I place an order? How much is shipping? Do you ship internationally?

Everything that's listed on the site is in stock and available to purchase. Whenever we sell out of an item (almost daily), that item is removed from the site as quickly as possible. It is rare that we sell an item that is not actually in stock, and truthfully, it bums us out when this happens. We work hard to keep our inventory updated and organized to avoid the awkward unpleasantness that comes from selling something that we don't actually have.

To place an order, simply use the "ADD TO CART" button located directly below the image of the item(s) that you are interested in. The item will then be added to your Paypal cart and, once all of your desired items have been added, you can simply follow the checkout process through the Paypal system. Shipping costs will be calculated for you based on the weight of your order and the service that you select. Piece of cake.

Oh, and yes. We are happy to accept orders from any country. All international orders are shipped on average within 1 business day, same as domestic orders. International postage rates will be calculated for you during the Paypal checkout process, and are based on the weight of your order and the destination.

Our current shipping options are USPS First Class Mail (for packages under 13 ounces), USPS Media Mail, USPS Priority Mail, USPS First Class International, and USPS Priority Mail International. Note that any time you are inadvertantly overcharged for shipping we will refund the difference to your Paypal account.

I just placed an order through your website. How long before it ships? Will I get some kind of acknowledgment of my order? Or a tracking number?

Yep, we'll email you ASAP with a confirmation of your order and an estimated ship date. Your order will then be securely and properly packaged with plenty of padding and plenty of packaging tape in an appropriately sized mailer or box. We'll print out a label for your shipment and email you the tracking information right away. Generally speaking, all orders are shipped within 1 business day, Monday - Friday, except for some holidays. But again, we'll let you know when your order is expected to be sent and if any delays might occur.

Can I get you to put some stuff on hold for me until payday?

No.

Sorry, but we don't allow holds or reserves on any items. Keeping an accurate inventory is very important to us, and allowing people to place a hold on one or several titles not only creates more work for us, it also turns our inventory counts into mush.

Additionally, our experience in allowing people to do this in the past has taught us that, despite the best intentions of our customers, most "holds" are never paid for and we're stuck emailing people to either (a.) remind them that these items are still on hold, or (b.) verify whether or not they still want the 9 tapes that have been sitting on our shipping desk for the last 3 weeks. It just doesn't work for us, sorry.

Can I pre-order a release that's coming out soon?

We don't do pre-orders, exactly. By that I mean, we will not allow you to order or pay for any title that is not actually in our physical inventory. If there is something that you are particularly excited about and would like us to send an alert and provide an email link for you to place your order the minute it arrives, we can do that. Just get in touch via the CONTACT page, and we'll go from there.

Hey, I see some tapes and stuff on your site that I want. Would you be interested in doing a trade? Wanna buy my old records?

No, thanks. Feel free to place an order, but we do not do trades and we do not purchase used stock.

I have a label that I think you might like to stock. Will you carry my releases? Or, can I send some promo copies for you to check out?

The best thing to do is to get in touch with us via the CONTACT page. We'll try to respond to your inquiry, but we get TONS of email from cool labels asking us to check out their catalogs. We can't always reply, but we do try very hard to read each email and visit label/artist websites. If you don't hear back from us, don't feel dissed and remember that it isn't personal. Maybe the timing isn't right, maybe we're over budget already (pretty much always a problem), or maybe it's just not a good fit. Whatever the reason, keep in mind that we can't carry every title that we would like to carry, and we can't answer every email. This is not a reflection on the value of your label or your music, and we encourage you to just keep on doing what you're doing to create and/or publish music that you are proud of.

Please note that promotional materials will not be returned to you, but we will contact you if we like what you're doing and have the budget to place an order. Any freebies that you send us will be passed on to our customers as a bonus item with their order after we've had time to check it out. We're not out to hoard free stuff, and we already have too many tapes and too many records...
