    Kluster - Zwei Osterei LP
    Bureau B #BB111LP
Kluster was a short-lived project of three musicians/artists/performers: Dieter Moebius, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Konrad Schnitzler. They recorded two albums with Conny Plank in 1970, unprecedented in their experimental radicalism. Chaotic, apocalyptic (noise) improvisations (a sound later termed industrial), enriched with recited lyrics in places. The trio split up not long afterwards. Exchanging the K for a C, Roedelius and Moebius continued as a duo under the name of Cluster, whilst Conrad Schnitzler went solo. "Zwei Osterei" surpasses the earlier "Klopfzeichen" album by some distance in terms of its harsh noisiness and near brutal sonic attacks.

Kluster was a short-lived project of three musicians/artists/performers: Dieter Moebius, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Konrad Schnitzler. "Klopfzeichen" was the most radical album of the early German pop music avant-garde by a country mile. Its sounds and noises had nothing in common with the sequencer-generated electronic music emerging from Berlin or Düsseldorf. Kluster music was Angstmusik, the music of fear.

The second "Performance" release documents a set at the BCA center in Burlington, Vermont during the US tour with Mirror To Mirror in November of 2011. Performing using only live cassette playback and manipulation of guitar recordings as the sound source. This release captures a more subtle, ambient side in a number of shorter pieces with a finale of heavily layered waves of loops using the 4 track recorder as an instrument, with detail paid towards the mixing of sound and the speed of the cassette as a tool for expanding melodies. Recorded by Oliver Mitchell, mastered by M. Geddes Gengras, and photos by Greg Davis.

    Studio SS - Dreamers CS
    Digitalis Limited #ltd140
This is the second time we are proud to feature the work of Swedish mastermind, Jan Svensson, on Digitalis. Previous to Dreamers, you likely heard his contributions as 1/3 of the maniacal FRAK and their Muzika Electronic LP. Well, with Studio SS he abandons his crew to toil away in his wired-up bunker. Dreamers rips out all the dance and pop elements from Muzika Electronic and focuses on the brittle, shattered bones.

Explorative synthesis is the name of the game, here, with Svensson digging through buckets of corroded circuitry, hoping that the one sound to unlock them all is still waiting to be found. But it's a fool's game, as we all know, because the further down that electronic hole you go, the less sense it all makes. Reckless bleets and splurps careen along like gravity is suddenly optional and we're just drifting through a field of space debris. Mutant rhythms blast out, making sure you make it back to the ground in a million pieces, ready for reassembly. Next thing you know, you're totally consumed by technology and have been sucked into the borg.

Luciano Maggiore - Intersezioni Di Vortici, Studi Ritmici E False Chimere CD
    Senufo Editions #senufo034
"intersezioni di vortici, studi ritmici e false chimere" is a suite of ten short compositions for modular analog synthesizer (except for one track that incorporates a few sounds recorded with a microphone). Initially conceived as series of studies on panning and phasing, the work ended to incorporate parts of two other series, all realised in Bologna between November 2011 and March 2012. The cover includes some of Maggiore's drawings from the same period. Luciano Maggiore lives and works in Bologna, and this is his first solo cd.

    Nicola Ratti - Streengs CD

'Streengs' is Nicola Ratti's fifth solo cd, and it showcases a completely new direction in his work. Using a minimal setup composed of a small analog synthesizer and a delay/looping device, amplified with two audio transducers placed on the strings of a grand piano, Ratti managed to create a very complex and dense soundworld. Every piece was recorded in realtime, during a residency at Hotel Pupik, Schrattenberg, in July 2011, allowing the sounds from the surroundings to interfere with the electrically-induced resonances of the piano. Mixed and mastered with Giuseppe Ielasi, a longtime collaborator (the two operate the Bellows project).

Adam Asnan - Fancies, Forbearance CD
    Senufo Editions #senufo031
Fancy: a 17th century term generally describing a composition in which form is of secondary importance. Fancies were usually contra-puntal and in several sections. (The Oxford Dictionary of Music)

Fancies (2009) served to reconcile previously unsettled material, based upon a scheme that condones disparity between its constituent parts. In the period since its completion, and subsequent issue on cassette, Fancies has come to represent an antithesis to what I originally termed 'a work in parenthesis'.

Forbearance (2011) was composed specifically to accompany Fancies, and can be considered its honorary sixth part. The work signals a shift in my attitude towards notions of compositional economy, formal concurrence and discordance, engagement and refrain – aspects of Fancies that I have since come to admire. Renato Rinaldi - Time Machine Vol. III CD
    Senufo Editions #senufo030
Third Volume of the 'Time Machine' series (volumes I and II have been released on two separate cassettes on Entr'acte).

"The Time Machine project was conceived in order to find a simple and immediate way to work with rhythm. I built two cheap and imprecise, almost-square wave oscillators with a wide range of frequencies. These oscillators can sweep and cross-modulate from sparse pulses to high frequency audio signals. I use a mixer to create feedback between the filters, CV and audio signals and simply record the output; there are no overdubs." (Renato Rinaldi)

Renato Rinaldi studied drama, composition and electronic music. After a number of years working as an actor he began composing music for theatre, radio dramas and video installations. He hasproduced several radio plays, documentaries and reportages for the Italian national broadcasting radio (RAI). In music, his work focuses primarily on the relationship between sound and environment.

Mike Shiflet / Pete Swanson - Bedside b/w College View LP
    Amish Records #AMI035RW
Amish is pleased to announce a new release featuring work from two American noise and sound artists, the Ohio-based Mike Shiflet and the recent Portland-to-New York transplant Pete Swanson. The fifth installment in the label's Required Wreckers series (AMI-035R/W) features side-long compositions that borrow as much from the worlds of noise and power electronics that Swanson and Shiflet were affiliated with in the early parts of their careers, as from techno and modern composition.

Mike Shiflet's "Bedside" utilizes disparate sources—guitar, field recordings, abstract electronic textures and white noise—to create a composition that's both warmly pastoral and defamiliar. "Bedside" is elegiac and slowly evolving, blending acoustic sound sources Shiflet then disrupts with understated percussive tremolo. This is one of Shiflet's most beautiful works to date. Shiflet has released a number of critically acclaimed recordings over the last decade for labels like Type and Ecstatic Peace!, as well as collaborating with C. Spencer Yeh in Burning Star Core.

Pete Swanson's "College View" documents another example of his recent recordings' attempt to blur the lines between techno, noise, and electronic music. "College View" drags Detroit dance music into a static field of electricity, and then doubles back again. "College View" documents another great example of Swanson's mature, post-Yellow Swans output, as indicated on a series of releases since 2011 on labels like Three-Lobed and Type.

    amish records

Miranda Lichtenstein and Cameron Martin provide the visual art for this release. The cover art and booklet included with the release feature images from a series of manipulated photographs of Chinese scholar rocks that the artists have worked on since 2008. The images suggest the same kind of blasted pastoralism that Shiflet and Swanson invoke in each of their pieces. Lichtenstein and Martin have each exhibited their work internationally in shows in New York, Tokyo, Austria and at the 2004 Whitney Biennial.

Gregg Kowalsky with Jozef Van Wissem - Movements in Marble and Stone LP
    Amish Records #AMI034RW
"Electronic Music for Square and Sine Waves" documents Kowalsky's contribution to the 2011 Activating the Medium festival in San Francisco. This commissioned piece continues Kowalsky's interest in how sound engages, manipulates and modifies one's awareness of space. This piece generates—as both the name of the festival and Kowalsky's composition suggest—sound that amplifies a hearing subject's relation to his or her environment. For this composition, Kowalsky tuned an AM radio to random interference between channels, static abstractions that bookend the work. Within the core of the piece, Kowalsky used contact mics to process this, and other, sound source(s) as he moved around the performance space. The effect of this movement generates both melodic feedback and acoustic forms that provide a subtle complement to the static interference of the radio frequencies.

"For Baroque Lute, Tapes and Resonant Space" documents Kowalsky's on going tape chants process, a project previously realized on both his Battery Townsley (2011) and Tape Chants (2009) LPs. For this iteration, Kowalsky tuned square and sine waves to Dutch lutanist Jozef van Wissem's lute and then played these recordings through cassette players. Though they have collaborated previously, this performance at Issue Project Room in October 2011 is the first chronicling of van Wissem and Kowalksy's duo-work.

In both his performances and sound installations, Kowalsky has shared the stage and/or collaborated with a wide range of contemporary artists and musicians over the last ten years, including Stephan Mathieu, Fred Frith Kevin Drumm, JD Emmanuel, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Ben Vida, Yoshi and Tashi Wada, Aaron Dilloway, C. Spencer Yeh Paul Clipson, among others. Kowalsky has released a number of critically acclaimed solo records for labels like Kranky, Senufo Editions and Root Strata, as well as working with Marielle Jakobson in Date Palms (Mexican Summer).
